Building Your Presentation

You know your audience. You have a general idea of the content you will be using for your presentation. Now it is time to get to work and build your presentation. Expect that it will actually take you a lot more time to develop the presentation than you initially think.

Research has shown that it can take up to one hour of preparation time to plan one minute of a presentation. Okay, that may seem like a lot of time, but consider everything that needs to be done to put together a high quality presentation, including:

  • the research;
  • organization and planning;
  • designing the presentation materials (i.e. PowerPoint or transparencies);
  • developing activities;
  • writing, editing and revising handouts;
  • printing materials;
  • practicing the delivery;
  • and the list goes on and on and on.

However, all that preparation pays off in the end with a high quality presentation or workshop that the participants enjoy and most importantly one from which they learn a lot and want even more.

Okay, so you don't have 180 hours to spend planning for a three hour training session. You can still put together a bang-up presentation, if you keep a few things in mind.

Planning a workshop is a lot like writing an essay. There are five major steps in the process. Think of it as the POWER2 process for presentations.

  • Planning
  • Organizing
  • Writing
  • Editing
  • Rehearsing and Revising
