The Anne Ford Scholarship
The Anne Ford Scholarship is a $10,000 award given to a high school senior with an identified learning disability (LD) who is pursuing an undergraduate degree.

Deadline:
Postmarked December 31, 2002

Eligibility and Selection Criteria
The National Center for Learning Disabilities, Inc. (NCLD) is seeking applicants for the Anne Ford Scholarship, which is available to students of high merit with an identified learning disability (LD) in public or private secondary schools. Financial need will be strongly considered. Minorities and women are encouraged to apply. Only U.S. citizens are eligible.

The Anne Ford Scholar
The ideal candidate is a person who has faced the challenges of having a learning disability and who, through hard work and perseverance, has created a life of purpose and achievement. The candidate embraces new opportunities and has a well-rounded perspective shaped by experiences in school, with family and friends, and through community involvement. The candidate understands how LD affects his/her life and knows the importance of self-advocacy. He/she is committed to completing a college degree and setting career goals. Particularly important is a candidate who believes in contributing to society in a way that increases the opportunities and potential of people with learning disabilities. Thus, as an Anne Ford Scholar he/she would be comfortable serving as a role model for others who struggle and succeed with learning disabilities, and would create through example a message of hope and inspiration.
Mentoring and Outreach Opportunities
The Scholar must be willing to mentor future Scholars and act as a role model for people with LD through such activities as public speaking, writing for publications, and other opportunities made possible through NCLD.

Application Requirements
Interested individuals must submit an application (available at www.ld.org) and either:

1. A 750 - 1,000 word written essay describing the applicant's learning disability and how it has affected his/her life, including scholastic achievement, relationships with family and friends, community involvement, and future aspirations. In this description applicants should specify their positive and negative experiences with a learning disability, and elaborate on how they have coped with the negative aspects. Applicants should directly address the qualifications listed above in their essays. Judges will be particularly interested in how applicants believe a college education will enhance their lives.
-or -
2. A video or audio tape (up to 15-minutes in length) with accompanying script or outline describing the above.

Applicants must also submit their high school transcripts, portfolios (if applicable), three (3) letters of recommendation (at least one from a teacher), a financial statement, and SAT/ACT scores.

Scholarship Requirements
Anne Ford Scholars will be required to submit annual reports (written or in video format) detailing their progress in school and describing their insights about their personal growth. The $10,000 scholarship will be paid in four yearly installments of $2,500. Scholars must complete their reports and submit college transcripts in order to receive payment. A final report will be due upon graduation (no later than June 30).

Selection Process
Final selections will be made in April 2003.
