Designing and Using Handouts

Resource Guides and Manuals

If you are providing a resource guide or manual as part of your presentation or workshop, consider using one of the templates that is included in your word processing program. These templates generally include instructions on how to use them appropriately and give a polished, professional look to your materials.

If you do use a resource guide or manual, stay consistent in the use of font styles and size. For example, have chapter or section titles one size throughout, sub-section titles another size, and text another size. Provide a table of contents at the front of the manual - so people will know where to look for specific information. Make an outline for the manual before you start working on the actual text; this can eventually be your table of contents. It is much easier to change the order or your outline than the order of the entire manual.

Consider purchasing dividers for the resource guide or manual. It may cost a little more to produce the materials, but will be worth it in the long run. Your participants will appreciate the extra effort on your part. If you can't splurge for dividers, then use a different color of paper to divide each section.
