The first three weeks are critical to the retention of the adult education student. During that period of time, you are the one that will make the difference for the student. How you interact with the student and the instructional strategies you use will determine whether or not that student will become engaged in the learning process or not.

Summary

The adult learner has unique characteristics of which educators should be aware. If educators understand their adult students and what motivates them, they will be able to build successful learning relationships. Adult education programs that support their students:

  • eliminate barriers within their programs,
  • recognize that a diverse population is an asset, not a liability, and
  • understand the importance of supporting and motivating the adult learner.

The ABE student puts a lot on the line by walking through the door of your classroom. You owe it to them to make it the best opportunity possible.
