Right Versus the Left
The Right Brain vs. Left Brain theory
of learning focuses on the structure and functions of the mind.
It suggests that the two different sides of the brain control two
different "modes" of thinking. It also suggests that each
of us prefers one mode over the other. Research has shown that the
left side of the brain is the logical, sequential, rational, analytical,
and objective side. The right side of the brain is the random, intuitive,
holistic, synthesizing, and subjective side of the brain.
Most individuals have a preference
for one of these styles of thinking. However, some students are
more whole-brained and handle both modes very well. In general,
traditional schools tend to favor left-brain modes of thinking.

Summary
Most ABE students march to the beat
of a different drummer when it comes to learning. In many cases,
that is why they left the traditional high school program. Somewhere
along the way, the teaching that was going on in the traditional
school program didn't match the way the student perceived or processed
information.
People learn in different ways. They
have preferences about the way they approach learning. They have
preferences about the way they demonstrate knowledge. The ABE teacher
must first recognize those preferences and then work to develop
a program that will meet the needs of all learners.
