Sometimes the term Adult General Education (AGE)
is used. ABE is part of the Adult General Education (AGE) umbrella, which
includes Adult Basic Education, Adult Secondary Education {including the
General Educational Development (GED) and adult high school credit programs},
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Vocational Preparatory Instruction
(VPI), and Adults with Disabilities.
OK, now that you have a basic definition
for ABE, where did this concept originate?
It would take a very long time to provide
a comprehensive background on adult basic education. For the "big
picture," read the following article by Carey Reid on The History
of Adult Basic Education from The Change Agent, NELRC/World Education,
September 1999, Issue 2.
