Students with Disabilities
Many students in ABE program have some type of either diagnosed or undiagnosed learning disability. In fact, 50 - 80% of adults reading below the 7th grade level have a learning disability according to the U.S. Department of Labor (1991). Some disabilities are more obvious than others, and of course some are more severe than others. Students may see the ABE classroom as their best hope for academic success and improved work possibilities. Your challenge will be to learn how these students learn best and to encourage them and help them stay motivated and focused, but not to let unrealistic expectations interfere with their learning achievements.

The Multicultural Student
Students need to know that you accept them. Always treat everyone in your class with dignity and equity. Academically, multicultural students may need more assistance in the areas of vocabulary and writing skills. They may have learned different ways to perform math calculations or have a different vocabulary in other areas. Your task is to help all of your students feel comfortable and accepted. Self-confidence is a great boost to overall performance.
