Module 7 - Staff Development

It's a Changing World!

Adult education is constantly changing. Although good teaching remains good teaching, it is important that you continue to obtain new and improved skills and to keep up with the latest information on Adult Basic Education programs. The world is rapidly changing. The most important part of your job as an ABE teacher is to help your students succeed, both in the workplace and in their personal lives.

You can accomplish this in two basic ways. The first is obvious - skill development. Extend your personal teaching skills by learning new things, including:

  • New strategies and activities
  • Higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills
  • The use of real-life materials and creative simulations
  • Integration of technology into the classroom
  • Increased content and context knowledge in all areas in order to create a curriculum that crosses all areas
