Let's end where we began with a statistic about the literacy level of adults in the United States.

Twenty-one percent (21%) of adults function at the lowest level of literacy. This means that approximately 45 million adults in the United States lack the basic skills to read and understand a note from their child's teacher, read a recipe, a newspaper article, instructions on a medicine bottle, or a voting ballot.

Information from the National Center for Education Statistics of the U. S. Department of Education (NALS Study 1994)

Being a teacher in an Adult Basic Education program makes you a very important person in the lives of millions of people. The finest gift that you can give your students is the encouragement that they need to grow to their full potential. If all adult students received the encouragement they needed, the genius in each of them would blossom.
