Looking
Ahead!
"Reading is an active and complex process
of constructing meaning from written text in relation to the reader's
experiences, knowledge, motivation, and the context of the reading situation."
To be good readers, children and adults need:
- Phonemic awareness-the ability to manipulate
the sounds that make up spoken language
- Phonics skills-the understanding that
there are relationships between letters and sounds
- Fluency-the ability to read with accuracy,
speed and expressions
- Comprehension strategies-- to enhance
understanding and enjoyment of what they read.
