Why Don't Students Comprehend?

Students may lack reading comprehension because of

  • failure to understand a word, a sentence, or how sentences relate to one another;
  • failure to understand how the information fits together in a meaningful way; or
  • lack of interest or concentration.

Your job is to do the best you can with the resources you have to help your students be better readers. We've shared lots of strategies and resources with you during this chapter. We leave you with one more list of strategies.

  • Read in chunks, sections, or paragraphs ("clicks and clunks")
  • Circle unknown or unfamiliar words as you read
  • After reading, recall as much as possible to check for accuracy
  • Check on how the passage connects with what you already know
  • Make a prediction
  • Stop and think about what has already been read
  • Visualize
  • Retell
  • Reread
  • Look at the patterns in the text structure
  • Adjust reading rate, slower or faster
