The Process of Acquiring Reading Skills

As adult educators, you can help children by helping parents. Many resources available as parent guides can be used as reading curriculum in the adult education classroom. Before you take a look at some choices, first review the developmental stages of reading among children.

Reading is a developmental process, and literacy development begins at birth. Children's ideas about reading are formed by observing and interacting with their significant others.

Children move through stages of reading development, and though the stages are not entirely separate, they do provide a framework for understanding reading development.
