Introduction

"My programs are being audited."  Say that statement in a room filled with adult educators and the most likely response will be  - "Oh, I am so sorry - when did you find out?"  Rarely will you hear - "Way to go. I wish they were auditing my program!"

It is unfortunate that the word "audit" generally raises such negative feelings in people.  The only time anyone is happy to hear about an audit, is when it is happening to someone else.

In reality, audits can be good things.  They provide educators with an opportunity to:

  • See everything that they are doing right and celebrate their successes
  • Correct any problems that may have slipped by them and improve their programs
Audits fulfill one other very important function - they make it possible for all adult educators to truly work on a level playing field.  Audits check to see that everyone is indeed playing by the same rules and following the standards that have been established.
