In Search of Definitions

Before you proceed with this web-based training, let's take a few minutes to define the word "audit". The following link will connect you with the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary and Thesaurus. When you reach the home page, type in the word "audit" and check the definition.

Maybe it is the word "audit" that raises concern. As you looked at the definition for audit, you found the following:

1 a. a formal examination of an organization's or individual's accounts or financial situation b: the final report of an audit 2: a methodical examination and review

Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary also provides the following synonyms for audit:

  • Scrutinize
  • Scan
  • Inspect
  • Examine

Look up each of these words and see how they relate to the audit process. As auditors come in to review your programs, keep in mind that they will do each of the following:

  • Scrutinize - look at the details of what is going on, the procedures that are being used
  • Scan - survey from point to point to obtain an overall understanding of a program or process
  • Inspect - search for errors or defects in the delivery of service or the following of procedures
  • Examine - determine the nature, condition or quality of a process or program
