| What
Makes Adults with
Learning Disabilities Successful?
It doesn't take being
"famous" to be successful in dealing with one's learning
disability. In fact, people with learning disabilities are successful
in many different fields of study. Although there are challenges
to being learning disabled, remember that everyone has strengths
and weaknesses. Then, what does it take for a learning disabled
student to be successful?
Research indicates
that there are factors that increase the likelihood of success for
an individual with learning disabilities. The individual should:
- Be informed that he/she has
the disability
- Accept the disability
- Develop approaches to education
and employment that acknowledge the disability and not attempt
to avoid the problem or label them as "learning differences"
or learning difficulties"
- Be goal oriented
- Look at past learning disability
experiences in more positive and productive manners
- Have a real desire to succeed
