  Assessing the Disability

What should you do if you suspect that a student/client may have a learning disability? You can assist that person in first having an assessment conducted by a qualified professional. Assessment refers to the gathering of relevant information that can be used to help an adult make decisions and assist him/her in identifying areas where assistance is needed.

There are three basic stages in the assessment process:

  1. Evaluation - includes screening and a thorough evaluation.
  2. Diagnosis - a statement of specific type of disability that an individual may have.
  3. Recommendations - direction regarding employment, education, or daily life.

Adults should always be assessed according to their age, objectives, and experiences. There is no one right way to provide an assessment. However, there are certain steps that must be followed.
