Key Characteristics of
Screening Tools

The first step in evaluation is usually a screening. Screening for LD requires that you:

  • Gather information about the learner.
  • Review observations with the learner. If the learner wants additional screening, obtain informed consent.
  • Select and administer the screening instrument.
  • Share the results with the learner and decide how best to use the results.
  • Determine if formal diagnosis is warranted and desired.

Screening tools are informal methods or tools that can help to determine if an individual is "at risk" for a learning disability. Screening tools may include such things as:

  • Reviews of medical, school, or employment histories
  • Written answers to a few questions
  • Observations
  • A brief test or checklist

It is important to remember that a screening is different than undergoing a comprehensive evaluation. Screenings only provide the necessary information for a referral for the complete evaluation.
