What Should I Look For?

Screening tools address potential indicators of learning disabilities. One basic screening method is to observe and record behavior patterns in your student. Some of the indicators that you may see include (the student will probably not manifest all of the following) difficulty in:

  • Understanding cause and effect or problems with sequencing and one-to-one correspondence
  • Expressing oneself
  • Following directions
  • Difficulty or disinterest in peer socialization
  • Staying focused
  • Organizing materials
  • Completing a job application
  • Feelings of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem
  • Finding or keeping a job
  • Following written directions
  • Managing money
  • Problem solving strategies
  • Putting thoughts down on paper
  • Reading, writing, spelling
  • Remembering and following the sequence of instruction
  • Remembering several verbal directions
  • Short attention span, restlessness or hyperactivity
  • Time management difficulties
  • Understanding appropriate social behavior
