After
I Have Completed a Screening, Then What?
After you have completed a screening,
you will wish to discuss the results of the screening with your
student. Include the differences between screening and diagnosis.
Locate an appropriate referral. Your school should have a list of
appropriate professionals who complete evaluations for your system.
You will want to refer the learner to the appropriate professional
and follow up with both the learner and the professional.
If you do not have a list of qualified
professionals at your site, you may want to check some of the following
resources for referrals to diagnosticians or other professionals
qualified to conduct assessments for adults, such as:
- Adult education in the public
school or community college system
- Adult literacy programs or literacy
councils
- Community mental health agencies
- Counseling or study skills centers
at local colleges or universities
- Vocational rehabilitation agencies
- Educational therapists or learning
specialists in private practice
- Guidance counselors in high schools
- Learning Disability Association
of America
- Special education departments
and/or disability support service offices in colleges or universities
Make sure that your students ask
questions about the person's background and training when seeking
a formal evaluation. The evaluation should include tests that assess:
intelligence, aptitude, achievement, and vocational interest. Other
tests may also be administered based on the individual needs of
the student. During the evaluation stage of the assessment process,
all relevant information about an individual should be gathered.
