Protection By Law

Now that you know about the characteristics of learning disabilities and the different ways to modify your own classroom, let's look at the bigger picture.

Legislation over the past 100 years has increasingly emphasized the need for appropriate education and training for individuals who are seeking to enter the workforce as well as for those individuals who are making career changes. Legislation has evolved over that same period of time, shifting the decision making process from the federal level to the local level. The following are the basic legal rights of all adults with learning disabilities.

Legal Rights of Adults with Learning Disabilities
  • Equal access to jobs, programs, and services for which they are qualified
  • Reasonable accommodations in job, program, or service activities
  • Disclosure or non-disclosure of disabilities; however, the choice to not disclose is basically a waiver of accommodations.

This program was developed by Dr. Rochelle Kenyon, Project Director, Florida Bridges to Practice, through an Adult Education State Leadership Grant from the Florida Department of Education, Division of Community Colleges and Workforce Education.

Content development by Dr. Rochelle Kenyon, Susan Pittman and Bonnie Vondracek. Web design and development by Dr. Debra L. Hargrove.
