  Steps to Make a Difference

Change is difficult. Many agencies continue to "do business as usual." To help disabled students reach their full potential, systemic change is required.

There are certain steps that are critical if change in the system is to be accomplished.

Step 1: All stakeholders need to come together and create a plan in which there is a shared vision between all services and agencies.
Step 2: Administrative support must be provided. No one can effect broad-sweeping changes alone. In order for change to occur, people from the top levels must work with practitioners to ensure that a plan is developed for change.
Step 3: Ongoing professional and staff development must be provided at all levels. It's not enough to merely plan. Professional development is required in order to ensure that the plan is effective and can be carried out by an educated group of individuals.
Step 4: Resources at all levels must be identified so that adults with learning disabilities can have access to quality services.
Step 5: Everything that is developed and initiated must be continuously monitored. Change is an ongoing process and must go through continual evaluation if it is to be successful.
