What Is Bridges to Practice?

Bridges to Practice is a program first developed in 1993 by the National Adult Literacy and Learning Disabilities Center (NALLD Center) through funding from the National Institute for Literacy (NIFL). The five-year effort consisted of a three-phase research and development plan to:

1. Organize focus groups and evaluate current screening practices and instructional materials;

2. Develop the Bridges training program and guidebooks; and

3. Review and continuously refine the guidebook materials to provide the most up-to-date resources.

By utilizing research-based information, the NALLD Center envisioned making literacy programs more responsive to the needs of adults with learning disabilities. Florida's Bridges to Practice project has as its mission a call to action to initiate reform so that all adults with learning disabilities will experience greater success in meeting their educational and life goals.

Florida's Bridges to Practice: An Introduction will provide you with an opportunity to better understand the diverse needs of your adult students, many who may have either diagnosed or undiagnosed learning disabilities.
