Known Causes of Learning Disabilities in Welfare Clients

So what exactly causes a learning disability? There are a number of different possibilities. Learning disabilities may be caused by:

  • Genetic defects

  • Maternal hypothyroidism

  • Endocrine gland dysfunction

  • Pre-natal malnutrition

  • Maternal substance abuse

  • Birth trauma

  • Diet

  • Chronic illness (ear infections, etc.)

  • Early childhood high fevers

  • Lead poisoning

  • Oxygen deprivation

  • Accidents

  • Toxins/poisons in the environment
