There is hope!

The U.S. Department of Education has been working on a process that would seek to address the issue of learning disabilities and the large Spanish speaking adult population. They have heard from ESOL professionals that many limited English proficient adults from a variety of language backgrounds are learning disabled. The response is that they must begin somewhere and that starting place is with the largest LEP group. The lessons that will be learned from this effort can then be put to use addressing the needs of adults from a variety of language backgrounds.

For More Information

A very helpful and informative section on ESL/ESOL and Learning Disabilities can be found on Florida's Bridges to Practice website at: http://floridatechnet.org/bridges. By clicking on the button labeled ESOL and Learning Disabilities, you will find resources including links to articles and research of interest. Also, look for the PowerPoint slide presentation developed and presented by Robin Schwarz from Lesley University in Massachusetts at the Florida's 2002 Disabilities Symposium. It is entitled "Learning Disabilities and ESOL" and can be downloaded at: http://floridatechnet.org/bridges/schwarz.zip.

To learn more about ESL/ESOL and learning disabilities, you may wish to refer to the references located in the file folder.
