Teaching Self Advocacy Skills

Teaching students how to deal with their academic strengths and challenges is only part of teaching students with learning disabilities. Another area that you will want to assist students with is self-advocacy.

Self-advocacy is a way of acting that helps the individual tell others about what he/she needs in a way that gets the job done right.

Take a look at the sandwich approach. Have the student think about the make-up of a sandwich. While visualizing (or looking together at a picture such as the one below), first focus the student on a strength that he/she has, next have the student mention a weak area or area of challenge, and follow that quickly by an explanation of a modification or accommodation that the student can use to circumvent or deal with the weak area.
