Teaching
Social Skills
Another area
that many adults with learning disabilities need help with is the
area of social skills. Social skills are the skills that we use
to interact with people in a positive way. Individuals with learning
disabilities may sometimes show rude or inappropriate behavior.
It is not that they show such behaviors purposefully; it's often
that no one has ever taught them explicitly how to behave in social
situations.
What do social
skills problems look like in a person with learning disabilities?
A person with social skills problems may:
- Often
miss social cues due to his/her concrete interpretation
of language
- Often
delay in responding socially
- Have
difficulty understanding sarcasm and double-meaning words
- Have
difficulty understanding indirect responses
- Possess
a feeling of social isolation
- Exhibit
low self-esteem
- Have
difficulty working with others
- Have
difficulty interpreting body language
- Use
inappropriate interpersonal distance
- Display
spatial orientation problems
- Have
time management difficulties
- Appear
overly anxious to please
- Be
continually frustrated and stressed out
