Addressing Changes in the GED Tests

In 1988, adult educators experienced a major change in the GED Tests with the inclusion of an expository essay.  There was great concern among educators then, just as there are concerns now, about the changes coming with the GED 2002 Series Tests.

The GED 2002 Series Tests will place a greater emphasis on workforce skills and preparation for higher education.  There are five major changes:

    • Skills will cross content areas
    • Critical thinking and problem solving will be a major component of the test
    • Language Arts will cover both writing and reading
    • A calculator will be used on one part of the Mathematics Test
    • Alternate formats or "constructed-response" formats will be used on the Mathematics Test
An excerpt from The Florida GED Teachers' Handbook has been provided for your review Florida GED Teachers' Handbook.  The file may be pulled down and printed How do I pull down and/or print?.  Print this information and distribute to instructors and other staff members working with GED students.

    Making Changes

The Official GED Practice Tests will not be available until the summer of 2001.  However, it is very important that teachers begin to make changes now.  After your teachers have an opportunity to review the excerpt from The Florida GED Teachers' Handbook, survey them to find out what types of new materials they would like to have in the GED classroom.  Post the results of your survey on the bulletin board.  This information will be shared with:

    • The Adult Secondary/GED/VPI Committee of the Practitioner's Task Force, to develop new curriculum and lesson plans to support the classroom teacher
    • Publishers, to enable them to develop materials which will be of benefit to the GED student and teacher
    Starting Over

When the GED 2002 Series Tests are implemented in January 2002, students who have taken the GED 1988 Series Tests, but have not passed all portions, will have to start all over with the new tests.  It is not too early to provide this information to students who are taking the tests now.  Develop a plan for your center to publicize this information, including timelines, methods of communication and responsibilities of various staff members.

    Planning for Success

Implementing new instructional strategies to address the GED 2002 Series Tests will require the development of new teacher training activities.
