* Language Arts, Writing

First, the name is different.  For 10 years we have been calling this test – Writing Skills.  Don’t think that overnight everyone will change to the new name – Language Arts, Writing.  That will take time.  However, the more you use the new name, the better, especially when you are talking with teachers or providing in-house training.

The major changes to Language Arts, Writing are:

  1. There will be more business-type material on the test.  The GED Testing Service has worked closely with business and industry to develop the new tests; as a result the material will be more businesslike.  Teachers will need access to material such as letters, memos, reports, etc.  They should use them in the classroom as they work with students.

  2.
  3. There will be a greater emphasis on organization.  This may be the most difficult for teachers.  They are used to teaching organization in writing the essay, but now they must also teach more “editing” skills.  Consider including some staff development in this area.

  4.
  5. The essay will be scored on a 4-point rather than 6-point scale.  Although this sounds like a major problem to implement, it really should make life easier for the teacher.  The new 4-point scale is easier to understand and use.
