* Language Arts, Reading

Besides just the new name, Language Arts, Reading shows some real changes for 2002.  There are three major changes on the new test.

  1. Once again we see the use of business documents as part of the Language Arts, Reading Test.  Teachers need an opportunity to become familiar with these types of documents.

  2.
  3. An area that will probably concern teachers is teaching students how to answer compare and contrast questions.  This is a higher-level skill and has not previously been asked of students.  Teachers will have to show students how to take multiple pieces of information, compare and contrast their content and then answer questions.  Some training and assistance is in order on this one.

  4.
  5. Finally, higher order thinking skills are a requirement for the Language Arts, Reading Test.  Teachers are used to working with basic comprehension, but this test uses analysis and synthesis questions as well.

Take a few minutes and think about what these changes will mean in the classroom.  List 3 things you can do to assist your teachers in preparing for the new Language Arts, Reading Test.  Post your responses to the bulletin board.
