The First Connection:  The GED Student

Welcome to the First Connection: The GED Student! This production begins with the most important person in the classroom - the student. As an educator, you must first connect with your students prior to any learning taking place.

Throughout this web-based training, you will have an opportunity to view video clips from an actual GED class at Indian River Community College in Ft. Pierce, Florida. These 15-30 second video clips will provide you with a brief look at different strategies in action. One word of caution - if you are using a dial-up modem, expect that it will take a minute or so to download the video clip.

By the end of this component, you will be able to:

  • Identify characteristics of the adult learner
  • Plan a smart classroom
  • Describe an effective GED program
  • Define the role of the GED teacher
  • Identify various learning styles
  • Explore websites that provide information on GED students, learning styles and theories, and programs.

Before you get started, click on the welcome video clip.

Let's take a Pre Test!

Who is the Adult Learner?

Adult learning is a huge enterprise.  Often it is spoken of by adult educators as if it were a separate domain from the rest of education.  Despite the vast array of books, journals and research on adult learning, instructors need to be continually aware of individual differences.  Adults learn in a multitude of settings and in diverse ways.  Let's take a look at some background information.

Here's your assignment:

  • Click on the admission ticket below to complete Learning Transfer Activity #1. Questions on this short questionnaire were taken directly from the Official Site of the GED Testing Service, specifically from the two highlighted articles.
