We Teach Who We Are

It is important for each of us to know what our learning strength is so that we can ensure that the strengths of our adult students are adequately met in our classroom.

Learning Tips For Effective Instructors

Learning occurs within each individual as a continual process throughout life.  People learn at different speeds and in different ways.  There are four critical elements of learning that must be addressed to ensure that learning occurs.  These elements are:

  1. Motivation
  2. Reinforcement
  3. Retention
  4. Transference
What is Good Teaching?

According to Lorraine Zinn, a researcher in the field of adult education, teachers first decide on the content and scope of what they will teach, then choose the method of instructional strategy with which to teach the materials.  This method of instrucional strategy depends on the teacher's views about teaching and learning.   Everyone has their own "philosophy" about teaching adults.

Let's See What Your Philosophy Is!

Complete the Philosophy of Adult Education Inventory (PAEI) Online:

Do you agree with Zinn's Inventory?  Create your own personal philosophy of good teaching.  You may wish to write one phrase, a short paragraph or list your own “top requirements.”  Post your philosophy to the bulletin board

For another opinion on what is good teaching, you may wish to read “Good Teaching—the Top Ten Requirements” by Richard Leblanc.

Numerous studies have been conducted on what adult learners expect of effective instructors.  Go to the bulletin board and list 5 attributes you feel would be documented by research.

Check your answers with those provided.
