The Third Connection:  The GED Program
page 2

So how did you do on the pre test?  Hopefully you did well.  Let's begin to build on the knowledge that you have.

In many small centers across the state and the country, the GED teacher is often the Lone Ranger – doing everything including:

  • Recruiting students
  • Meeting and greeting new students
  • Testing
  • Helping students set goals
  • Building lesson plans
  • Teaching
  • Evaluating
  • Celebrating graduations
The Third Connection will take you through the major components of a GED program.  Be sure and check with your administrator for special local requirements that may not be covered.

Writing Your Script
Your approach to new students will either turn them on to the possibilities of success or turn them off.  Whether you are working in a large learning lab in a major city or a small classroom in a rural area, it is all about setting the stage for success with new students.  Forget the idea that students are coming to you because they love to learn.  They are coming to you because they need something that you have.  They need that "something" for a very special reason.

Today, most adults who earn their diplomas through the GED program have set their sights on higher education and training.  Use this to your advantage in recruiting or working with the new student.

Listen to this GED student. Do you have students in your classroom with similar goals? Do you know the goals that your students have? If not, it is time for you to spend more time getting to know your students.
