The Third Connection:  The GED Program
page 3

Now that you have seen and heard from one student and why she has returned to school, take a look at the following scenario, decide how you would handle the interview with Mike, and complete the interview activity.

The Interview
Scene 1:  Mike is 18 years old.  He dropped out of school two years ago and has been working at McDonald’s since then.  He arrives at your door not quite knowing what to do – or where to go.  Mike is your typical teenager, in a hurry to get the GED and not really knowing what all it may entail.  Mike really doesn’t have any clear goals for what he wants to do now or in the future.  He just knows that working at McDonald’s doesn’t pay enough for him to buy that new car or even think about moving out on his own.

Participant Name:

Mike:  Hey, uh, I quit school about 2 years ago and need my GED – what do I do?
Your response

Mike:  You know I don’t want to spend a lot of time on this – uh – I have a job and friends and well you know – I just need my GED.
Your response

Mike:  Am I going to have to sit in those little desks and listen to someone talk all the time?  Cause, I really hated that in school – I can’t sit still for very long.
Your response

Mike:  Do I have to be here everyday?  You know, I like to hang out with my friends some time.
Your response

Mike:  Someone told me that this class was different – and that you do some, you know “fun stuff” – what do you do?
Your response

Mike:  OK, I’ll give it a try, but if I don’t like it – well – you know – can I quit? (No response needed here)
