Component 5 - Partnerships

A local civic organization has just called your center. They need a speaker for their luncheon meeting tomorrow since the scheduled speaker cancelled. Your boss turns to you and says, "Why don't you go to that meeting and tell them all about your program? It would really be a great opportunity for you!"

What is your first reaction? Hopefully it is one of "What a great idea! I would love to do that!" However, many times the thought of speaking in front of a group of people causes "terror in the hearts" of even the very best educator.

It is very important to an adult education program to establish a positive relationship with local civic groups, businesses, governmental entities, local chambers of commerce, and of course various community groups, such as churches, advisory boards, libraries, etc.

Do you make a good spokesperson for your organization? Think about what it takes to be a good speaker.

A good speaker should be:

  • Able to represent the interests of the organization
  • Knowledgeable about organization goals and procedures
  • Able to speak in front of groups, large or small
  • Capable of motivating an audience
  • Able to answer questions or refer them to others if he/she does not know the answer
  • Able to effectively use presentation or visual aids
