Using a MALD

OK, Now That I've Tested My Students, What Do I Do?

Remember, the basic structure for the VPI programs is:

  1. Interviewing and goal setting
  2. Pretesting using one of the state-approved assessment instruments
  3. Prescribing individualized instruction
  4. Managing the learning process and activities
  5. Posttesting using one of the state-approved assessment instruments

Once your students have completed their pretests for the VPI program, it is time for you to identify what you can do to insure success for your student in his/her chosen vocational/technical education program.  The first step is to use a MALD!  No, a MALD is not some new kind of foreign language!  A MALD is the Modular Analysis of Learning Difficulties.  It is a form that groups test items according to deficiencies and performance levels as indicated by testing results. Once you have completed the MALD on a student, you will then write an individualized prescription or learning plan for the student.  The VPI program uses Prescribing Catalogs that match skills with a variety of selected materials in various media to teach students to master skills with which they are having difficulty.  Prescribing Catalogs are an integral part of the VPI system and are available through the Division of Workforce Development.  These "catalogues" or prescriptive learning plans are available for reading, mathematics and language.  Instructional materials listed in the Prescribing Catalogs form a core curriculum for your VPI program.  Sound confusing?  It's not.  The steps in writing a prescription or learning plan for your student are:

  • Determine the assessment instrument and level taken by the student.
  • Complete the MALD (Modular Analysis of Learning Difficulties).
  • Write the prescription by priority as listed on the MALD. (When writing a prescription, be sure to start with lowest priority on the MALD. At the present time, MALDs are only correlated with TABE 7 & 8 and AMES.)
  • Look in the Prescribing Catalog for the material(s) to prescribe for each priority. You may wish to use supplementary instructional modules for specific occupational programs that you have developed or that have been developed by vocational instructors.
  • List the prescribing materials on a prescription data form.
  • Update the prescription as necessary based on teacher's judgement.
