How Do I Run a VPI Lab?

There are five basic procedures for Vocational Preparatory Instruction.  In any VPI lab, you should (1) interview, (2) diagnose/assess, (3) prescribe, (4) manage and (5) evaluate.  Take a look at each of the procedures and what that means in the planning process.

1. Interview

After referral to the VPI program, the individualized instruction starts with the initial interview of the student.  Information (personal data) required to register the student in VPI is gathered at this time and recorded on the student's VPI Vocational/Technical Education Plan.  Clues to the student's needs are noted and used to assist the Learning Manager in planning the student's individualized program of instruction. Assessment of individual learning styles should be done at this time.  Remember that all information concerning students is confidential.

The VPI Learning Manager also meets with the student's vocational program instructor to ensure that the academic instruction will be integrated with the student's occupational courses and that the vocational instructor is made aware of the student's learning styles.

Why do you need to collect all of this data?  First, in order to better serve your students, you need good information.  The second reason that everyone needs to collect good data is simple - funding.  The funding that you will receive for the VPI program is based on information or data that is obtained and sent to the State of Florida.  If students are successful in your program and appropriate data is collected and sent, funding continues.

Record Keeping

Record keeping is necessary for all types of programs. Upon intake, you should interview the student and collect demographic information.

The following items should be part of your record keeping process:

  • Basic Demographic Information
  • Student's legal name
  • Birthdate
  • ID and/or social security number
  • Vocational program designation
  • Vocational/Adult General Education Disability (student must self-identify)
  • Exceptionality, primary (student must self-identify)
  • Special needs of the student/any modifications or accommodations needed
  • Date of enrollment
  • Enrollment status
  • Financial information
  • Native language/Limited English Proficient
  • Racial/ethnic status
  • Resident status, state/country
  • Basic skills initial test scores
  • Learning style preference
  • Occupational or interest inventory or goals
  • Additional information required by your LEA
