In Florida, over 2 million (17.3%) of the population is limited English proficient, an increase of 500,000 since 1990. Florida Department of Education, Office of Multicultural Student Language Education (OMSLE) reports that Florida's LEPs come from 258 countries and speaking 207 languages. 1999-2000 school year data indicates that 69.8% of Florida LEPs are Spanish speakers. Other languages spoken by more than 1% of LEPs are Haitian-Creole, Portuguese, French, and Vietnamese.
