  TIPS FOR TEACHERS

Many VPI labs have a VESOL specialist on staff so that limited English proficient students are being served effectively in the VPI Labs (GET FILE: Program Courses Standards for Adult VESOL, Appendix A in hardcopy module). However, all staff members share responsibilities for the success of LEP students in our programs.

Some things to you can do for your students, your classroom and for your school are:

Find out about your students language abilities.
Although a person may be able to speak English, he or she may not be able to read and write English or communicate in the English necessary to be successful in the workplace.

Find out about your students cultural background.
Ask students about working in their countries. Things are not always done the same way as they are here. You can help them recognize differences and learn what adjustments to make
.
