As part of money management and consumer education, you will also want to help students understand more about banking institutions. Many students have never had a bank account. They don't know how to even open an account, much less understand the myriad of charges that they can incur if they are not smart consumers. The CCCS can also help in this area. You may want to visit a couple of the local banks and credit unions to obtain application forms and information about the various fees and charges. These forms and brochures can provide an excellent resource for developing math lessons and help students better understand the concept of comparison-shopping. Students need to understand that comparison-shopping is done at more places than just the local supermarket. Comparison-shopping should be a part of every shopping experience, from the supermarket to retail stores and from selecting a bank to buying a car. If you want to learn more about Money Management and Consumer Education, check out the VPI Staff Self-Training Program, Complementary Skills Module. You may download the module from the Florida TechNet site at www.floridatechnet.org/inservice/vpi. The module has excellent resources for the VPI lab.
