Everyone has different beliefs.  However, when working with students, you must be aware of any miscommunication because of gender differences, ethnicity or cultural backgrounds.

It is important that you take time to talk to your students about areas that may block communications between individuals who differ in gender, ethnicity or culture.  These areas include:

  • Ethnocentrism - the attitude that "my way is best" and the inability to accept another's view of the world
  • Stereotyping - generalizing about a person because of culture or gender rather than observing individual differences
  • Discrimination - giving differential treatment to an individual due to an actual or perceived difference
  • Cultural Blindness - proceeding as if differences did not exist and accepting that if one is sensitive, one need not worry about a person's culture
  • Cultural Imposition - believing that everyone should conform to the majority rather than celebrating individual differences
