Introduction

What Is VPI?

VPI or Vocational Preparatory Instruction is an Adult General Education program that prepares students for academic, technical and personal success.  Through the VPI program, students can attain academic and workforce readiness skills at the level of functional literacy (grade levels 6.0-8.9) or higher so that they can pursue certificate career education or high-level career education.  Because VPI is a workforce development program, the course must reflect the requirements of the workplace.  Prior to 1999-2000, VPI was known as SAIL (System for Applied Individualized Learning).  VPI is divided into four courses with three literacy completion points (LCPs). Remember, it is always important that related vocational skills and terminology be an integral part of the VPI curriculum.

What Are Complementary Skills?

The Florida Department of Education "Student Performance Standards" for Vocational Preparatory Instruction has identified a set of skills that every student should have in order to function in today's society.  These skills are called "complementary skills." Not every student will need instruction in each of the complementary skill areas.  Some students may be proficient in some areas and have weaknesses in others.  Complementary skill instruction should be based on individual need.  VPI Complementary Skills require that students be able to:

  • Identify sources of community service agencies
  • Demonstrate consumer awareness
  • Identify principles of business organization and management
  • Practice health maintenance skills
  • Demonstrate knowledge of responsible citizenship
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of governmental structure
  • Recognize fraudulent practices
  • Demonstrate cultural and environmental awareness

In this web-based training, you will have an opportunity to learn more about each of these complementary skills and how you can help students gain the knowledge and skills they need to be productive citizens.
