Making Smart Career Choices

So, what type of career development process did you go through?  Probably not very much.  Twenty years ago adult career development was rarely even contemplated.  Students in high school may have received some career assessment or planning, but rarely was there time for the counselor to do much beyond having students take the ASVAB test.  The reality is that most people find their way into a career or job just by chance.

In some cases, an individual goes into the same career field as his/her parent or another family member. Sometimes a job is selected because a person "has" to have a job.  Sadly, there is still very little career development going on, except in programs such as VPI.  In VPI, students have an opportunity to explore things about themselves, their learning styles, their interests and aptitudes.  They also have the opportunity to set goals, educational and employment, for themselves.
