Now it is your turn to visit O*NET OnLine and see what is available to you and your students.  The instructions have been provided both online and in a .pdf file that you can download.  You may wish to print the directions so you don't have to constantly return to this page in the web-based training.

Directions for O*NET OnLine

  • Go to the O*NET website by clicking on: http://www.onetcenter.org/
  • Click on Career Information
  • Read about O*NET OnLine and what it can do to help students make career decisions
  • Click on "O*NET OnLine"
  • Click on the box "Find Occupations"
  • In the box labels Title of Keyword - type in the word "therapist"
  • Click on the box "Find Occupations"
  • Click on the title "Physical Therapist Assistants"

This will take you to a new window that reads:

Physical Therapist Assistants 31-2021.00

Assist physical therapists in providing physical therapy treatments and procedures.  May, in accordance with State laws, assist in the development of treatment plans, carry out routine functions, document the progress of treatment and modify specific treatments in accordance with patient status and within the scope of treatment plans established by a physical therapist.  Generally requires formal training.

  • Look at the boxes in the middle of the screen
  • Click on "Details."  This opens a new box that includes the following information:

    • Interest
    • Work Values
    • Work Context
    • Tasks
    • Work Activities

Click on Knowledge - you will see the following:

Knowledge is an organized sets of principles and facts that apply to a wide range of situations.  All Knowledge areas important to this occupation are shown.  Scroll down the screen and look at each of the areas of knowledge that a Physical Therapy Assistant would need to have to be successful on the job.

  • Click on the back button and return to the Details screen
  • Select "Interests - you will see the following:

Interests indicate a person's preferences for work environments and outcomes.  The six O*NET Interest categories are shown below.
