Job Searching Skills

Job searching involves more than just knocking on doors.  It involves knowing on which doors to knock, as well as how to knock.  The how to knock is built on communication skills.  The student must have good communication skills - both written and verbal, so he/she can write the resume that will open the door, as well as be a successful interviewee.  The successful candidate must also have good people skills.  It is important that students understand that someone with good people skills can often be taught the technical skills needed for a particular position - they cannot always be taught how to interact effectively with other people.  Their ability to interact with other people will be evaluated as part of the interview process.

There are several different areas that should be covered when helping students strengthen their job searching skills.  These include how to:

  • Develop a personal data sheet
  • Develop a cover letter and resume
  • Complete applications accurately
  • Prepare and complete a successful interview
  • Prepare for possible employment tests

Let's take a look at each of these and see what you can do in the VPI lab to help students make the transition from student to employee.
