Always Say Thank You

It is important that students always build good relationships with a potential employer from the beginning.  One way to build that good relationship is sending a thank you letter no more than two to three days after the interview.

Students should also thank anyone who has helped them in the job search process.  Thank you letters should be brief.  About three short paragraphs are appropriate.  Although a hand written note can add a more personal touch, it is better to type the letter to show professionalism.

A thank you note:

  • Helps the interviewer remember the individual
  • Shows an employer the individual's interest in the job
  • Shows an employer that the individual has good follow-up skills
  • Keeps the individual in the competition for the job
  • Thanks the interviewer for his/her time

Employment Tests

Some employers require individuals to take employment tests before completing the final hiring process.  Students should be aware of the different types of tests that may be provided.  For more information on employment tests, please read pages 18-19 in The VPI Manual found at http://www.floridatechnet.org/inservice/vpi/assess/modules/Readiness.pdf.

Work-Related Documents

There are also a number of forms that a new employee is expected to complete.  These forms include:

  • Form W-4 - a federal tax form
  • Form I-9 - employment eligibility verification
  • Time sheets and cards
  • Health coverage application
  • Retirement plan enrollment
  • Employment contracts

When a new employee actually begins work, he/she may face a number of different forms required to fulfill his/her job functions.  It is important to remind students to always exercise caution when completing forms and to always use accurate information.
