What Does the State of Florida Have to Say About My GED Program?

Just like the American Council on Education (ACE) has specific rules and regulations regarding the administration of the GED Test, the State of Florida also has rules and regulations regarding the operation of General Educational Development (GED) Programs.  Before we begin with the “nuts and bolts” of program operation, let’s take a look at the rules found in the Florida Administrative Code to ensure that our programs are in compliance with all of the requirements.

There are three basic State Board of Education Rules that address the GED program:

6A.6.014, FAC – This rule addresses the use of initial assessment to place adult education students in the appropriate level of class.  This is very important when making a determination as to whether a student should be placed in Adult Basic Education or GED Preparation.  Adults who function above a 9.0 grade equivalency will be more likely to succeed in GED Preparation than those who score below this level.

6A –1.0943, FAC – This rule addresses the ability of local program providers to modify assessment test instruments and procedures.  This allows all adults to be treated fairly and recognizes that some modifications may be necessary due to a student’s physical, emotional or learning disability.

6A.6.021, FAC – This rule addresses the awarding of a State of Florida High School Diploma to any individual who has met the requirements and passed all portions of the GED Tests.  This rule addresses the score requirements, eligibility requirements and guidelines for establishing an age waiver policy at the local level.
