Setting
Up the Program
GED programs are housed
in many different settings. Often we must use buildings or rooms
that are available to us rather than having the opportunity to choose the
perfect setting. When you decide to expand or establish your GED
program, you should ensure that your facility is:
-
Safe, accessible and appropriate
for adults (this means no little chairs and tables)
-
Conducive for the teaching
of adults
-
Attractive, clean and secure
-
Equipped with adequate utilities
such as indoor and outdoor lighting
-
Set up for the use of technology
-
Accessible to public transportation
and has adequate parking
-
In an area where the target
population lives
-
Accessible to persons with
disabilities
What should the classroom
look like? As the administrator you should ensure that each classroom
has:
-
Appropriate furniture for
adults, i.e. an adult-oriented room with adult-size chairs and tables
-
Adequate texts, materials
and supplies to meet the needs of individual students
-
Access to computers and
multimedia instructional aides, i.e. overheads, television/VCRs, CD players,
etc.
-
Attractive surroundings,
i.e. posters, plants, visual aids
-
Adequate utilities such
as air conditioning and lighting
-
Restrooms available, including
a handicapped restroom facility
-
Occupancy permits in compliance
with the number of students to be served
