Using PowerPoint

Most presenters and trainers use PowerPoint to develop multimedia presentations. Even if you don't have a laptop and projector to run a PowerPoint slide show, you can build your presentation using PowerPoint and then print the slides as transparencies. It is easy to learn the basics of PowerPoint. With a little practice you can add animation and graphics to create professional and interesting shows.

Using Tutorials

Microsoft Office XP and most other versions of Microsoft Office provide tutorials for each component of the product. If you are not familiar with using PowerPoint, simply open the PowerPoint program, open the Help Menu, and click on Microsoft PowerPoint Help. When the office assistant pops up, type in "tutorials" in the question box and then press search. A separate window will open entitled Microsoft Interactive Training. Click on the link to "Creating a Custom Slide Show." This will take you to the tutorials' page and you can select the tutorial you would like to view. All tutorials are self-paced and can provide you with basic information about the program.

Don't Over Do

Unfortunately, people who are new to PowerPoint often get so carried away with all the neat things that it can do that they over do their presentations. With PowerPoint, less is more. Flying text sounds cool, but will drive an audience to distraction in no time. A little flying text adds interest - a lot of flying text is a big no-no. Colors that look great on your computer screen may not show up when viewed through the projector. Using multiple colors on one slide can be a case of overkill. Better to split text between two slides than cram 10-12 lines of text on one slide. Use the following guidelines to help you avoid the pitfalls of "PowerPoint Overload."
