Celebrate the Power of Reading
A trainer's handbook designed to incorporate the five essential elements of literacy

The curriculum found on this site was developed through an Adult Education Family Literacy State Leadership grant, "Parents Who Read Have Children Who Read," and awarded by the Florida Department of Education Division of Community Colleges and Workforce Education, to Children of Chaos, Inc., a not for profit organization that reaches out to children and families in crisis.

The curriculum handbook, entitled Celebrate the Power of Reading, is designed to incorporate the five essential elements of literacy - phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and text comprehension - in five different modules. It was developed to be used in conjunction with reading celebration fairs and subsequent follow-up technical assistance reading workshops; however, it is meant to serve you simply as a basic reference guide on how to introduce adults and children to the joy and value of reading and encourage broader literacy behaviors in the home.

Celebrate the Power of Reading is divided into two sections: 1) The twenty-minute sessions, described in the Reading Celebration Fairs section of the handbook, introduces the parents to the five components of literacy, 2) the follow-up workshop section of the handbook includes curriculum designed for one-hour workshops that provide more in-depth information about the five building blocks of reading.
