Which Layout is Right for You?

Think for a minute about professional development activities that you have attended over the past year. How were the rooms arranged? Where you crammed into a space that was really too small? Did you have a table on which to write or were you trying to balance everything on your lap? Was there ample space for everyone or did you spend most of the time worrying about the next time you would get an elbow in the ribs from the person sitting next to you?

Sometimes you will just have to deal with the situation you are given - a room that is truly not appropriate for the training activity. However, even in the worst of situations you can make a difference by looking critically at the room itself and making some adjustments given the basic elements included in the room.

There are five basic room layouts that presenters use. Each has advantages and disadvantages. The key is to set up the room so that it will work for the type of presentation that you will be giving.

Take a few minutes to review each of the following room layouts - look at the ways in which they are normally used. Think about the presentation that you will give and see which one would be most appropriate.
